Abstract

Quantitative research on climate impacts and demography is often seen as objective because of its reliance on data and numbers. However, it is important to remember that such research - like all research - represents only a partial perspective, especially since it is mostly produced by the Global North and male scientists, while the impacts are and will be felt most violently by women from the Global South.

At the same time, quantitative approaches in climate and demographic research frequently adopt an emotionally detached perspective, where highly sensitive topics, such as the effects of climate change on conflict, mortality or migration, are discussed with a disembodied "view from nowhere" (Haraway, 1988). This detachment can create dissonance among researchers, and even emotional disengagement from the issue more broadly.

In this seminar, drawing from Feminist Political Ecology (Harcourt et al. 2023), Donna Haraway’s work on situated knowledge (Haraway, 1988), the Data Feminism framework (D’Ignazio and Klein, 2020), and my own experience in research at the intersection between population and environment, I will explore how acknowledging our positionality and emotions in relation to our research can enhance both the practice and communication of science. I will also discuss how integrating practices of care into the population-environment research community may not only improve the well-being of some researchers but also make scientific findings more relatable and accessible to the public. I will explore whether such approaches could build greater trust in science, making it more concerned for diverse perspectives and world views.

This seminar aims to challenge conventional norms in climate and demography research and open up new possibilities for more accessible, inclusive, and emotionally engaged scientific practices.
