Abstract

Socio-demographic changes, including increases in life expectancy, improvements in education, rural-to-urban migration, will be crucial in determining exposure and vulnerabilities to future environmental change. Yet, current projections of health impacts rarely consider socio-demographic developments, which might lead to unreliable and unrealistic estimates of future risks. We present two health impact projection studies and one climate impact attribution study that explicitly consider population dynamics. The first two studies link a demographic projection to an integrated assessment model to project the co-benefits from reduced air pollution on life expectancy and child growth in India under global climate change mitigation and national air quality control scenarios. The third study explores the association between ambient temperatures and neonatal mortality and the contribution of past climate change to observed neonatal deaths in 29 low- and middle- income countries.
