Abstract
In this talk I will present first an integrated approach to digitising complex structured historical records using examples from a series of historical documents on which I have worked. I will briefly outline the technical aspects involved and discuss recent progress in this field. In the second part of the talk I will introduce a new method to estimate population at the municipal level for (most of ) France before the French Revolution. I am particularly keen on receiving feedback on the methodology and its possible extension to earlier periods.
